 Medications

Treatment at Pain Consultants of the Rockies includes a wide range of treatment options. Interventional therapies such as injections, spinal cord stimulators, or intrathecal pumps are the preferred method of treatment as they provide longer lasting pain relief and allow you to lead your life without the annoying side effects of oral narcotic medication.

Dr. Ribnik’s goal is to use the minimal amount of narcotics necessary in your treatment plan, although some oral medication may be necessary. Different classifications of medication may be ordered for you and these are explained below.

Short Acting Opioids:
These may be either class II, class III, or class IV. Class II and class III have a significant potential for abuse, and may lead to physical or psychological dependence. Prescriptions for Class II opioids must be hand written and have no refills. These medications include Percocet, Percodan, Dilaudid, Morphine, Oxy IR, and Methadone. Prescriptions for Class III opioids may be either hand written or verbal and refills are permitted. Medications include Vicodin, Lortab, Norco, Tylenol #3 or Tylenol #4. Class IV opioids may be either hand written or verbal orders and have a limited potential for physical or psychological dependence. Medications include Darvocet, Darvon, or certain cough syrups.

Long Acting Opioids:
These medications are Class II narcotics which have a significant potential for abuse and may lead to physical or psychological dependence. Examples of these medications are Oxycontin or MS Contin.    Anti-inflammatory medications frequently used include Celebrex, Daypro, Robaxin, Arthrotec, Bextra, Baclofen, Mobic or Toradol.

Steroid Anti-inflammatory medications can be either long or short acting. Short acting steroids are Decadron, Solu-Medrol, or Prednisone. Long acting steroids are generally used in the various injections. Muscle relaxants are useful in relieving skeletal muscle spasms without interfering with muscle function. Medications commonly used include Flexeril, Norflex, Soma, or Zanaflex.

Combinations of the above medications are frequently used. Different strengths of medications are available, and adjustments may be made in your program to achieve maximum pain relief with the smallest amount of medication. Close co-operation and communication are essential in a successful treatment program, and Dr. Ribnik and his staff are available to answer your questions and provide support to you.
